What is Breast Augmentation?

Cosmetic breast surgery is a personalized procedure that reshapes the breasts to appear fuller. It is often considered to be one of the most sought-after cosmetic surgeries, as it provides women who dislike how their breasts look numerous opportunities for improvement. Using implants or fat from the patient's body, this enhancement surgery improves breast size and shape and creates a gorgeous and natural-looking outcome. Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Frederic Corbin is skilled in executing this procedure and performs numerous breast augmentations every year. During your private consultation at Dr. Corbin Plastic Surgery in Brea or Beverly Hills, CA, Dr. Corbin will listen to your aesthetic concerns and provide you with all of the choices available. This will allow him to customize a treatment plan to reach your unique goals.

Implant Options

During your consultation with Dr. Corbin, he'll recommend the appropriate implant based on your body shape and the results you wish to achieve. Implants come in varying sizes and shapes — all of which are carefully considered in order to achieve the desired outcome. The most common types of breast implants are silicone and saline, both widely chosen and safely approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).  Candidates considering saline implants must be at least 18 years old, while patients must be at least 22 years old in order to undergo augmentation with silicone implants. Other options include gummy bear implants and an autologous approach through fat grafting. In addition to the type of implant used, there are other important factors to consider.

Implant size is chosen based on the number of CCs of silicone or saline used. To determine the correct volume, Dr. Corbin will measure how much native breast tissue exists and take into account the size you hope to achieve. In the operating room, it is normal for Dr. Corbin to temporarily switch out multiple implants to get an idea of the best fit.

Implants come in either a teardrop or round shape. Both shapes are widely used; however, most of our patients select a round-shaped implant because it generally looks and feels more natural and adds a fullness to the top of the breast that many patients prefer.

Implant profile references the projection of the breasts. In other words, this is what one sees from the side view. The most common projections include low, intermediate, high, and extra high.

Making Your Choices

These options may be overwhelming, but determining the correct implant is generally somewhat easy once the objectives are outlined during the consultation. These considerations combined with the experience of Dr. Corbin ensure the right outcome is met.

Ideal Candidates for Breast Implants

The decision to have mammoplasty (breast augmentation) is personal. If you're considering this treatment, it is important that you do it for the right reasons. You should be healthy and at a normal weight and be the proper age to receive implants. If you are unhappy with the shape of your chest because your breasts appear small or asymmetrical, you may benefit from this surgery. Additionally, if your breasts have been affected by aging, nursing, or weight loss, then this procedure may help to give them life with increased shape and fullness. It may also be a good option if you weight train or have an overall lack of original breast mass.

Breast Aug Surgery Technique

Incision and implant placement are considerations that are decided prior to surgery. During the procedure, Dr. Corbin will make the incision is the chosen place and then slip the implant into its position. There are a couple of techniques that he may use for implant placement: either submuscular placement (under the pec muscle) or behind the breast tissue but over the pectoral muscle. Where to insert the implant depends on a number of factors, including the type and degree of implant enlargement, along with the expert opinion of Dr. Corbin. Regardless of the incision type, scarring is usually minimal. Implant placement is determined based on your implant size, activity level, and body type.

What to Expect with Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation is performed as an outpatient surgery with patients under general anesthesia. After making the incision, Dr. Corbin will insert the chosen implant through that incision, deposit it into a surgically created pocket, and then fit it into its correct position. After this process, he'll carefully secure the incision with sutures or surgical adhesive. All patients will be taken into a recovery area and carefully monitored and screened prior to being released. You will be sent home wearing a compression garment to help reduce swelling. Several days after surgery, the bruising and swelling will slowly start to fade, and your breasts should start to look and feel more normal as they settle in their new position. A large percentage of patients can resume normal activities within the first week; however, you should avoid physical exertion, such as exercise, for a minimum of 6 – 8 weeks. Breast enhancement surgery generally results in gorgeous outcomes that look and feel natural. This procedure can be life changing for many patients, as the outcomes increase their self-confidence.

Breast Augmentation FAQ

How much does breast augmentation cost?
The total price of breast augmentation surgery will vary depending on your choices and whether you are receiving any other surgeries. When your treatment plan is developed in your consultation, Dr. Corbin can go over overestimated costs and financing options. To ensure your results match your goals and last a long time, it is better to focus on quality over costs.

Do I need a breast lift or augmentation?
Your plan might include implants, a breast lift, or both. A breast lift removes excess skin and improves the breasts. Implants, on the other hand, enhance the shape and size of the breasts. During your consultation with Dr. Corbin, he will listen to your needs and goals before explaining your treatment options. A combination of augmentation and lift is often a part of a mommy makeover to revitalize the breasts after pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Can I breastfeed with implants?
If you want to breastfeed after breast augmentation, be sure to tell Dr. Corbin during your consultation. It is usually possible to breastfeed after implants with the right surgical technique and placement. Breastfeeding and pregnancy can alter your results, which is why it is better to wait until your family is complete to have breast augmentation.

Can I have my implants removed?
You might decide that you want to remove or replace your implants. If this happens, Dr. Corbin offers breast revision surgery. In revision surgery, your current implants will be either replaced with new implants or simply removed. If you want to have your implants removed, you may need to have a breast lift since larger implants may stretch your skin. If you have any questions or concerns after your breast augmentation surgery, schedule a consultation at Dr. Corbin Plastic Surgery to discuss your options.
