What is Breast Implant Removal?
Sometimes, after getting a breast augmentation to change the size and contour of the breasts, women may decide to have them removed for a number of reasons. At Dr. Corbin Plastic Surgery in Brea and Beverly Hills, CA, board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Frederic Corbin meets with patients who want to get rid of their breast implants. In some cases, a breast lift may be required after implant removal, depending on the type of implants removed and how much your skin stretched. A lift can typically help improve the look of sagging skin, which sometimes remains after implant removal. If you want to return to your original breast size, breast implant removal surgery and a breast lift can typically create beautiful results to improve the look and texture of your breasts.

Can you Remove My Implants?
Breast implant removal may be an option to fix a range of issues experienced following breast augmentation, such as scar tissue (capsular contracture), implant malfunction, or dissatisfaction with breast size. Some women may just prefer their original breasts and want to return them to that appearance. No matter the reason, breast implant removal combined with a breast lift can help to counteract the outcomes of breast augmentation, giving you a natural-looking, desirable aesthetic. Before your procedure, Dr. Corbin will talk with you about your specific cosmetic goals so that he can best achieve them.
How Implants Are Removed
During breast implant removal surgery, Dr. Corbin will remove the implants and may also need to eliminate scar tissue. Scar tissue is common after getting implants and needs to be removed if it affects the form of your breast or causes pain. After removing the implants, Dr. Corbin may perform a fat transfer, breast lift, or both based on the treatment plan formed during your consultation. Additionally, there are several options to add volume after implant removal in order to enhance the shape of the breast.
The recovery period varies for each patient depending on the repair required following implant removal. After the surgery, Dr. Corbin will provide post-procedure directions and might recommend additional procedures to help reduce scarring. For the first couple of weeks, patients usually experience swelling and bruising and must avoid strenuous exercise until cleared by Dr. Corbin. However, we encourage patients to get up and gradually move around to help with blood flow. Optimal results can normally be observed about 4 – 6 months following the procedure.
Breast Implant Removal FAQ
Is breast implant removal painful?
While patients will be under general anesthesia during the surgery, there can be varying degrees of pain felt afterwards. By choosing an experienced surgeon, such as Dr. Corbin, you can rest assured knowing they will do everything in their power to make the procedure as comfortable as possible.
Will my medical insurance cover breast implant removal?
Depending on your specific situation, your insurance may cover the cost of having your breast implants removed. This occurs in cases when Dr. Corbin has reason to believe that the implants are causing adverse effects to your health and/or breast tissue. However, insurance will not cover the cost of the surgery if the reason for the removal is not related to your health.
Will I need a breast lift after having my implants removed?
Due to the stretching of the breast skin and tissue in order to adjust to the breast implant, there may be some saggy or loose skin if the implant is removed and not replaced. In some cases, this skin will shrink back to its original position, though this is not always the case. For patients concerned abou this, we usually recommend having a breast lift in conjunction with the implant removal in order to maintain the perky appearance of your breast.
