What is Ear Surgery?

Ears that protrude outward, are misshapen and uneven, or look unnaturally big can negatively impact your self-esteem, especially when you're young. Ear reshaping surgery (also known as otoplasty) is a cosmetic treatment that helps to redefine the size and shape of the ears to create a natural look. Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Frederic Corbin has helped many patients overcome their embarrassment of showing their ears with this surgery. Regardless of the physical irregularity, ear surgery at Dr. Corbin Plastic Surgery allows a patient to confidently show their face without embarrassment. If you or your child are concerned about the shape or size of their ears, contact us to schedule an appointment with Dr. Corbin to learn more about ear reshaping surgery.

Candidates for Ear Surgery

Otoplasty can be performed at any age; however, it is common among children and is recommended before a child reaches elementary school. By six years of age, this procedure is safe to be performed on a child. If you're frustrated from the look and shape of your ears because they stick out or are too large, then otoplasty may help you gain a more natural appearance. If you suffer from a torn or damaged earlobe, you may also be a candidate for otoplasty.

Otoplasty Technique

Cosmetic ear surgery is performed using anesthesia, either general or IV sedation. In most cases, the incision is placed near the back of the ear or inside the inner ear. During surgery, cartilage may be removed or added to create a more natural appearance. It is usual for both ears to be altered during surgery to make sure they appear symmetrical. After this, the incisions are secured with sutures and wrapped for protection.

After Ear Surgery

Once your otoplasty is finished and we release you to leave the hospital, you should rest and recover at home. Dr. Corbin or a member of his team will give instructions for recovery. It's important to avoid touching your ears. Furthermore, you should avoid laying on your ears and should instead sleep in an upright position for the first few days. Dr. Corbin recommends a follow-up appointment about a week following surgery. During this time, Dr. Corbin will take off the coverings and look at your ears. You should begin to see a more natural-looking appearance, and the results will continue to improve as your ears heal.

Reshape Your Ears

Although your ears are a small part of your face, an abnormal position, shape, or size can make a significant difference in your appearance. Otoplasty (ear surgery) may help your child avoid getting teased at school or may help you if you feel uncomfortable about your ears.
