About Lip Augmentation

If you have naturally thin lips or you've noticed less volume in your lips over time, then lip augmentation may help give you a full, well-shaped mouth. Surgical lip augmentation can be done with silicone implants, a fat transfer, or a lip lift to obtain the look you desire. Lip augmentation can provide amazing results that last for years. For nonsurgical lip enhancement, there are several dermal fillers that can temporarily volumize lips for a fuller appearance. If you're interested in learning more about surgical or nonsurgical augmentation, contact Dr. Corbin Plastic Surgery in Brea or Beverly Hills, CA to schedule an appointment for a consultation. Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Frederic Corbin can discuss your options and create your personal lip augmentation treatment plan.

  • Lip Implants
Providing the most lasting results, silicone implants can be placed in the upper or lower lips to enhance the shape and volume of your mouth.
  • Fat Transfer
By taking fat from one area of your body with liposuction and adding the processed fat to your lips, you can get natural volume.
  • Lip Lift/Vermilion Advancement
This is a surgical technique that alters the outer lines of the lower or upper lips to increase the area and shape of the mouth.
  • Dermal Fillers
Injectable dermal fillers (like JUVÉDERM) can temporarily add volume to lips and decrease the appearance of fine lip lines.

Ideal Candidates for Lip Augmentation

Surgical or nonsurgical lip enhancement can help give you more voluminous lips and a shapelier mouth. Depending on your concerns and goals, you can decide on a surgical lip augmentation procedure for lasting results or nonsurgical dermal fillers to avoid recovery time. It can be good to start with injectable fillers to see how varying volume amounts look and then get a surgical lip enhancement later. Ideal candidates for upper or lower lip enhancement at Dr. Corbin Plastic Surgery:

  • Have naturally thin lips or have lost lip volume with age
  • Have asymmetrical or uneven lips
  • Want to improve their whole face
  • Are in general good health

Our Lip Implant Techniques

The approach taken during the procedure varies depending on the chosen course of treatment:

  • Lip Implants
A thin incision will be created at the corner of the lips so the implant(s) can be guided into place. It can take around 1 – 3 weeks for the implant(s) to settle into their final position and for any swelling to subside, but lip implants typically provide results that last for a long time.
  • Fat Transfer
First, liposuction will extract fat from your thighs or another area of your body with unwanted fat. The fat will be cleaned and injected into your lips until the desired fullness is achieved. Since a portion of fat is usually reabsorbed in time, the lips can be overfilled to compensate for this loss. Lip augmentation using a fat transfer may be repeated over time to sustain or enhance your lips, but generally results generally last for several years.
  • Lip Lift/Vermilion Advancement
For a lip lift, a thin incision will be made on the lower or upper border of the lip. An area of skin outside the mouth will be removed, then the lips will be pulled to cover the excised skin and stitched into their new position. This lip advancement surgery gives lasting results that improve the shape and size of the lips.
  • Dermal Fillers
Nonsurgical lip augmentation can be done with dermal fillers (like JUVÉDERM). Dermal fillers can be done as an outpatient procedure in one of our treatment rooms. Depending on the brand of dermal filler chosen, a local anesthetic may be in the formula or else a numbing cream can be applied to the lips before treatment. Once your lips have been cleaned, several injections will be made in the target areas and then massaged to even out results. You'll be able to leave after your procedure to resume your normal routine.

What to Expect After Lip Augmentation

It is important to follow the recovery instructions given by Dr. Corbin in order to heal more quickly and get the best results. Whether you received a nonsurgical or surgical lip augmentation, your lips will probably be tender or sore for several days. With a fat transfer, you can expect the area where the fat was extracted from to be tender as well. We recommend cold packs and nonprescription pain medications to help address any discomfort and swelling. The results of lip augmentation with a dermal filler can be visible anywhere from 3 – 12 months following the procedure, depending on the brand chosen for the treatment. Lip augmentation surgery tends to provide long-lasting improvements, but the natural aging process may affect your results over time. Talk to Dr. Corbin about maintenance treatments that can freshen up your lips.
