What is Microdermabrasion?

If you run your hands over your face, does your complexion feel smooth and soft or like sandpaper? If it feels rough, the top layer of your skin may be covered with dead skin cells that are making your complexion uneven and dull. At Dr. Corbin Plastic Surgery in Brea and Beverly Hills, CA, we offer medical spa services like noninvasive skin resurfacing using microdermabrasion. Fast and effective, microdermabrasion treatments remove the outer layer of dead and damaged skin so your complexion is healthier and brighter. This procedure can be used on its own or along with a complementary skin treatment, such as a dermal filler or chemical peel, for greater results. At your consultation, board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Frederic Corbin will create a unique treatment plan to fit your needs and complexion goals.

Ideal Candidates for Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion sessions may improve the visibility of blemishes on the skin's surface, such as fine lines, uneven texture, dull skin tone, clogged pores, scars, and sun damage. It's generally appropriate for men and women of all skin tones and types who want healthier, clearer skin. These treatments are most often used on the face; however, it can also benefit the skin on your hands, neck, and chest. This procedure shouldn't be performed on skin with an open wound or a chronic condition, such as acne or rosacea.

Our Microdermabrasion Technique

Microdermabrasion treatments are completed in our office after a thorough consultation to determine what procedures will give you the best results. During the treatment, we'll ask you to sit back in a treatment chair while we clean and prepare your skin. The handpiece will pass along your skin as the tool both exfoliates and sucks up debris. Although the treatment may feel odd, it's not typically considered painful, so you likely won't need a local anesthetic or numbing cream. The microdermabrasion treatment will be performed evenly in the selected areas but with extra care on the delicate skin around the eyes. Once the treatment is complete, we'll lightly cleanse your skin to remove any residue before massaging in a moisturizer with sunscreen, chosen for your skin's specific needs.

What to Expect after Microdermabrasion

Following treatment, you can get back to your regular activities, but you need to use some form of sun protection since your skin will be sensitive. Your face should feel softer and the tone should look more even. To extend these benefits, Dr. Corbin recommends getting microdermabrasion treatments once every 4 – 6 weeks. Many patients at Dr. Corbin Plastic Surgery feel that after microdermabrasion treatments, their home skin care products (especially moisturizers) soak more easily into the skin for better results.
